Kathleen Waterford’s story

Kathleen Waterford is an eczema sufferer who believes that a yeast infection – candida – was responsible for her severe eczema. She claims that following a natural ‘caveman’ type diet – i.e. one that consists of poultry fish, a little beef, non legume vegetables, nuts, seeds and olive oil, and avoids sugar, dairy foods and grains – has cured her symptoms. Incidentally, Kathleen does suggest the reintroduction of certain starchy foods, such as brown rice and potatoes, after five weeks of following her initial recommendations, which makes the diet slightly more balanced. Whilst this diet seems extreme and shouldn’t be undertaken without consulting your GP first, it may be worth a try if all else has failed. The ‘caveman’ diet is more balanced than it first appears – although it excludes dairy foods, which are rich in bone-building calcium, it includes other sources, such as leafy green vegetables, nuts and seeds.

Details of Kathleen’s book, The Skin Cure Diet, in which she outlines her experiences and the diet she follows, can be found in the Helpful Books section at the end of this book.

What is candida?

Candida is a type of yeast that can be found in dark, moist areas of the body including the mouth, the digestive and genito-urinary tracts, as well as on the skin. It’s thought that healthy bacteria control the number of yeasts in the gut, but if the immune system is depleted, a sugary diet is eaten, or there are insufficient ‘good’ bacteria in the gut, candida can grow out of control and have a detrimental effect on an individual’s health. Common symptoms include thrush and some people believe eczema may also be caused by candida. However, the medical profession is generally sceptical of these claims.
